Exploring the underestimated corners of the world requires a passport to wear and a somewhat adventurous nature.
It is the only Yugoslav nation that avoided conflict in the early 90s and is one of the most hospitable places in the world. This guide will take you through 10 of Macedonia's most popular destinations, teach you how to get there, what to expect, and what to look out for when enjoying a royal holiday.
Berovo
Borovo is an air spa in Macedonia. Hidden deep in a pine forest, it is close to one of the most beautiful lakes you have ever discovered. A city is a place where you can enjoy the best traditional Macedonian food.
The menu is super affordable and going back home without ordering every meal is a real treat. Be sure to try Tavce gravce, Stuffed peppers, Turlitava, Selsko Meso, Pastrmajlija, and of course Ajvar. You can also enjoy Macedonian white cheese and Rakiza, the strongest alcoholic beverage.
Canyon Matka
Everything worth visiting in Macedonia is located on the periphery. Canyon Matka confirms this pattern more than anywhere else.
When the slopes and the crystal clear green water flow for miles, this site will take your breath away at once. A somewhat challenging mountaineering route along the valley, with many adventurous opportunities to explore and perhaps the largest cave complex in this part of Europe.
The Marble Lake near Prilep
On the main highway from Skopje to Pirlep you can stop near the village of Belovodika and go up the hill for a short hike. You will arrive at your destination in thirty minutes. What lies ahead is a mirror. A large amphitheater, carved out of white marble, above a crystal blue pocket. As reflected in this monumental structure of nature, you can climb the cliffs, swim down the lake and enjoy the sunshine.
Needless to say, this is one of the most underestimated places in this part of Europe.
The Bay of Bones
These renovated settlements are located on the beach and will take you about 15 minutes to drive from the center of Ohrid.
Opening up your imagination is truly a sight to behold. Lake Ohrid, which has a lot of scenic views along the way, makes its push even more satisfying as you cross the beach. Once there, the settlements will take your breath away.
Vodno
Above the capital, Vodno is a recreational area serving over 700,000 people. The best part, however, is its general proximity to the Skopje hub. In less than half an hour, you will forget about the urban jungle at the expense of immersion in this scenic college.
The climbers cut to the left and right and take you on a somewhat challenging journey through lush green forest. You can climb mountains, walk through the forest or board a cable car and enjoy the view without sweating. A giant metal structure of a cross sits on top. This symbolizes Christian devotion, where you can enjoy a panoramic view of the Skopje from one end to the other.
The Mavrovo region
The village of Mavrovo is located deep in the national park, near a beautiful lake. Here you can view traditional Macedonian food, from the farm to the table, and postcards worth a panoramic view. The sunken church is an attraction in itself, and if you catch the low tide, you can go inside and explore the interior.
